New York State Electrical Power Sources: Today and Tomorrow

In the fall of 2004, the New York Public Service Commission adopted a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) program. The goal of the program is to increase the amount of renewable energy sold to customers to 25% by 2013. It is expected that wind will comprise the majority of the renewable share. The RPS is expected to change the electric power portfolio of the state, resulting in cleaner air and economic growth.

The top graph [below] shows the current mix of fuels used to generate electricity in New York. The bottom graph shows a possible mix if wind is used to its full potential in New York.
